Good Old Charlie Brown Book

Peter loves to read - I mean looking at books.  Whether it is a picture book or a chapter book.  He always looked as if he is comprehending what he reads.  I caught him doing it again here.  Doesn't it look like he is "reading"?  :)

I love how he held his head and the pages.

My Joy

What brings me joy today?  Once again, my children.  While I have been busy, my dearest daughter tended to her brother and made some great memories for us all to enjoy!

My Boy, My Joy!

Last September when we signed up Joshua for our school's beginner concert band, the drummer position was already taken. We had not really a clear idea what other instrument he wanted to play and that we could afford it.  Well, like all things in our lives, the Lord knew it before we did.  Robert was able to get a saxophone tenner from Craig's List.  We had it tuned and got a few new gadgets for it (still need a new case) and Joshua was on his way to learn a new instrument (couldn't say he was happy as he really wanted to play snare drum instead).

At first, it was not so motivating for him to practice.  As you know, learning new keys and the handling of the saxophone and the biggest challenge - the blowing part of it is not that appealing to someone who really rather play drum.  If you have followed my blog for a while you know I am all for "one small bite at a time" kinda mom, so I agreed with Robert to let Joshua practice only 15 minutes per day to encourage him to play.  That seemed to work out fine for him.

Fast forward to this January, he practiced more than 15 minutes a day now and is loving the sound the instrument makes.  His blowing is under control and his diligence of practice earned him the respect from his peers and his teacher would always praise him and tells the class how daily practice is the key to learn any instrument and be good at it.  I no longer needed to remind him to practice.

Yesterday they performed alongside the children's choir, a patriotic theme for the coming memorial weekend.  It was such a joy to see how he has improved over the course of one school year.  He was offer to participate in a more advanced band and their first performance will be on June 4th.

I am so tickled when things works out like this. Praise be to God!

Month of May

The past week just zoomed by! We are half way in May already! Some times I wonder if I could ever savor this month?
I love the month of May. It is like a new beginning and it has Mother's Day in it. However, there also seemed to be so much to do or to finish.
Since I have determined that 2010 is the year I am to get our home back in order and continue to instill some good habits in our children's lives, I have found myself constantly thinking up little projects.
I think the reason I felt like the time is flying by is because I am caught up with Christine's excitement of her photography events. Christine is excited as she just did another family location shooting and two wedding photo shooting opportunities are in the horizon. I am so happy for her. She really is serious about this photography thing. I hope that the Lord will help her to capture the essence of all that's around her.
Finding joy in the midst of all of these seemingly chaos is not that hard when you have a toddler in the house. Peter always has a way to get to my heart and put a smile on my face. I love him so!
So even for this extremely busy month, I have found joy in spending time with my children and snap away with my (not Christine's) camera, most of all, make lasting memories with them.

Joshua had fun inventing this model.

He even put a little motor with it so it could spin. But he forgot to put it away at night...

Guess who found it in the morning? He had the "Ooops... Hi Mommy..." look. LOL!

I found him doing this this morning. I just love those little "piggies" on his feet.

Peter is really good with toys that have very small pieces. He is one of those little kids that won't put everything into the mouth but play with them. Thank the Lord for that!!!

Did I say I like the month of May? I went to another Tea the day before Mother's Day. It was lovely... (Picture taken by Christine)

I got to visit with my friends... Here is Annette with me. (Pic taken by a friend)

Here is our daughters.

Recap

Kids and happy time always seem to have a way of disappearing FAST!

Erik, Emma and the grand kids are on their way home now. We missed them already! I am so thankful to have spent time with them during their visit. Now every time when we say a certain word or phrase it would remind us of Ezri and the way she said it!

I hope to go visit them next year.

I was under the weather last week. Just out of the blue. No one else in the house got sick though, praise the Lord!

I took Peter to the Doctor this morning to have his puffy left eye checked out and the Doctor said he has an infection in his eye (?)! I asked where could he have gotten it and she said sometimes it can just be a small foreign object got into his eyes (even shampoo). Peter has no fever or any other symptom except the puffy red (on the bottom of the) eye. She asked me to use Johnson & Johnson's No more Tears shampoo.

As I was in CVS picking up the prescription and shampoo, they couldn't locate his file. Then the clerk asked: "Does he not go to the doctor often?" Whoa!!! I never thought of it but it is true, besides the regular baby care check-up, Peter was in the doctor's office for only two times in his life, three with this eye thing.

The plain yogurt works! Yay! The daily intake of avocado obviously works too as Peter weighed in at a whoopin' 38 pounds at the office!!! Wow!

Onto Joshua, he enjoyed his big brother's company so much that after Erik left, he felt like something huge is missing. We did some Star Trek movie watching while Erik was here. Erik is a Trekkie. He explained some parts of the movies to me (I am not a big fan of science fiction movie). Josh just altogether had an awesome "out of this world" brother bonding time with Erik.

Christine's free lance photography biz is getting responds. I am so happy for her. Last Sunday We spent about five hours on location shooting. As I was waiting for her and her friend to do the shooting, I was once again so thankful for being able to be in my girl's life. I want to do whatever I could with her. She will grow up and be on her own soon enough. I want to soak in all of the time we have together and make memories so I will have no regrets. Christine is a very sensible girl and I pray that she will be used by the Lord to do His will accordingly.

The house... It was not bad, we were keeping it up but just didn't add new hot spots to each person last week. We are doing it this week again. Erik went home and vacation is over. *sigh*

We were watching one of The Waltons series a few nights ago, when one scene came up that Erin heard the preacher's calling at the door and she wanted to be with him, so she closed her Short Hand books (SHORT HAND!!!! NOW THAT'S ANCIENT!!!) and left them on the clean dinner table, Joshua made this comment: She is cluttering up Ma's Hot Spot! Woooo... music to my ears! LOL!

We had some great time with our kids these last few weeks.

I love my kids and happy days even though they both seem to have a way of disappearing FAST. ♥

We had a lovely time at the Mother-Daughter Luncheon.

My girls in action! Christine did a photo shoot of Ezri. We had a great time chasing her around.

Peter refused to take a nap in his comfy bed but ended up falling asleep watching Winnie The Pooh on the couch. I popped his head up by placing a couple of square pillows on his side. Silly boy but we still love ya!

Careful!

Have you seen any of the Tim Hawkins videos? If you have not, get yourself some laughs by checking it out.

This particular one "Tim on parenting" we saw about a month ago gave us some great laughs and every time I said the word "careful!" I think of him.

Two mornings ago, Peter were laying on my bed with me and we could hear Robert in the shower. Suddenly, something fell and made a rather loud crashing sound. Little Peter's respond was: caREful...". It was so funny! he didn't actually said the word but he imitated the sound of the word and the expression. It was one of those priceless moment!

Anyway, I hope you are posting your just for the joy of it stories today. I am sort of under the weather and not feeling all together... but will check on the stories later this evening....

Can't post without a picture, this one was the winner of the week. Enjoy!

Peter made himself a pair of "cool looking shoes".

Fun Time

It is so hard to believe that one week has gone by since Erik has been here. We had so much fun together that I know it would be hard to readjust once they return home.

Last night we had a laughing spell during a game playing. We like the monopoly game a lot in this household. Erik brought with him the new version of the game called Anti-monopoly. It plays differently than the original one, rule wise. I didn't join them (I was too tired to think) but I listened to to their talks while they played the game (I love listening to my children enjoying each other's company). I don't know who started it, but before I knew it, we were laughing uncontrollably! Joshua even rolled on the floor, that's how serious the laughing spell was! Erik for some reason just knew which laughing button to push on us! I felt like I had exercised a whole evening with all the laughing we did.

I wish I took some pictures of them playing the game but, yah, I was too busy laughing!

I did have some other pictures of the kids though...

Erik gave Joshua a military hair cut. I miss Josh's curly hair!

Erik giving a presentation at our CAP squadron. He captivated the whole audience, even the Senior members! I am so proud of him. He definitely was blessed with the gift of speech.

Popsicle time - Peter just chowed down that treat!

Ezri was taking it easy, she wanted to savor every bite...

Roxas needed some help and auntie Christine came to the rescue.

We have this puzzle that is missing one piece and Ezri was just really bugged by it (she is a wonderful puzzle solver btw), so Peter decided to improvise...

A 3-D car puzzle piece that fits the slot perfectly!

A Mother's Simple Joy

I like simple things. My life has been a long complicated journey and thank the Lord that I could see His wisdom through simpleness.

If you have followed my blog for a while, you would have noticed that I have simplified the "blog look". I love talking about my daily life with my children. I like talking about homemaking process, I like talking about how God has daily blessed and protected me ~ all in simple words.

I also like to talk about joy. That's why I make my Thursday's post a remembrance of the joyful moments in my life.

This Thursday, my joy is having my married son and his family here in town visiting! I missed them so much since they moved away last year.

Erik and Emma

We had a blast! Peter finally met the niece who is older than himself and the nephew his same age. Watching the three playing together warmed my heart.

Christine and Joshua had been counting the days ever since they knew their big brother is coming home for a visit.

They will be here for three weeks. Even though we won't see them everyday, I know the memories we will be making in the few days we would be together will hold me through another year.

The simple joy for a mother of having all her children together is so precious as we all know, when the time comes for them to leave home, the mother knows she will cheer them on to whatever their endeavors would be but inside her heart she can't help but feel the void. I am far from having an empty nest but because of the big span of my children's ages, I got a taste of what it is like for mothers with older/married children.

My boys - 22, 12 and 2.
I thank the Lord for the time spent (and will spend) with my son, my daughter-in-law and my two beautiful grand kids. We didn't make any grand plans, just simply enjoying each other's company.

Through simpleness, I have found great joy in the life He gives me. Praise the Lord!

Provision

I have never doubted about God's provision in my life. Never.
The reason I could say this loud and clear is because God has always provided both my earthly needs and my spiritual needs.
I have always had a roof over my head, clothes on my body and food on the table.
These all seem to be very basic stuff, but, when there's only one income in the house, sometimes things could look and feel scary.
I have done my share of frustration, self pity (when I compare my home with others), and sometimes, down right angry.
I felt entitled, I felt I deserved something better, I felt the bitterness.
But one thing I never loose sight of, though, is His presence in all the situations. I know God always has a lesson to teach me as He allows me to go through some of life's trials.

Envying beautiful homes had always been my weakness. I would get all worked up inside after I visited a friend's home with all the bells and trimmings. I would come home and literally hated my place. One good thing I got out from blogging has been that I could see many bloggers' homes without knowing them or them knowing my "stalking". I was surprised that while I have "envied" many pretty homes, there were quite a bit of bloogers living in places that are much older than mine or more clutterer than mine. And than one day, I wandered into the Tiny house website. It has changed me. I started looking around my home, all of the sudden, my home seemed huge! It is still 800 Sq. ft., but it is 700 Sq. ft. bigger than the tiny houses. I clicked. It was all about perspective. The Tiny house floor plan was well laid out and the items in the house are simple and functional. I was sold on the concept of "Less is More" once again.

Did I say God led my wandering into that website? Well, He did. Shortly after that "conversion", I was in this huge and beautiful house for an event. As I was admiring the beauty of the place, there was not a trace of covertness inside my heart.

My appetite of a big house has curbed. Thank you Lord for forgiving my sin of covertness!

Next came my children's needs (and wants).
We have always taught our children to know the value of a dollar. They all have done well. Not sure about my married son as I don't really know his spending habit any more. But for Christine and Joshua, they have done well in their "money management". They have been blessed with material things from family members as well as friends and acquaintances! I won't go into details as to what they have been blessed with but we were surprised and speechless every time when the gifts were given. Sometimes, it was not even the tangible thing, it was the gift of TIME! These dear people WANT to invest their time to enhance my children's lives! Wow!

This gift of love humbles me, greatly. Praise the Lord for His goodness!

As for food, clothes and everything else, we have been blessed with some wonderful programs in the community. We have food share, clothes exchange, freecycle.com and Craig's list. Which has been so helpful to our family. We still shop for new stuff but have grown to be very aware of what we bring into our home. My 4Rs were born from participating these programs.

Our earthly needs definitely were met, to say the least. Thank God for His provision!

A beautiful Easter bouquet from our dear friends the Neuzils.

I rescued these two basil plants from the community food share. One died and one survived. Guess my thumb is getting a little greener, I have not killed them both.

These clothes (after minimized Josh's closet) went to the clothes exchange box to bless others as we have been blessed.

Paths

It all started yesterday when Christine offered to serve us breakfast.
I was feeding Peter his breakfast when Christine asked:
"Mom and Josh, would you guys like some eggs for breakfast?"
Would I??? Of course I would! How nice it was to have someone else cook breakfast for a turn, and it was not even Mother's Day.
As she was getting everything ready for the cooking, I decided to take a shower figuring she may need some "alone" time in the kitchen with her assignment. Yup, you heard me right, cooking breakfast for the family was one of her Home Ed homework assignment.

As I was taking my shower, I thought about how fortunate Christine was born in America, where girls have an opportunity to do things they truly like.
Growing up in a culture where girls were not treated as precious as boys, it had casted a shadow over my teen years when the time most learning in life took place. I remember being told that I only needed to get a great education and then my life would be where I wanted it to be. So I "walked out" of the kitchen, did not want to deal with anything domestic related.
As you know, no one could predict life except the Lord, It ended up that I had lost the chance to continue a "nice" education but instead, escaping from the horrid of communism at age 16 and became one of the infamous "boat people".
Life went on. But I was crippled in the paths of neither a "well educated super woman" nor a "domestic Diva". My first homemaking experience came when I got married. The only thing I knew how to do at that time was to boil water. No kidding. It was terrible. I felt so inadequate in the kitchen. It took me years to want to cook. Now cooking doesn't bother me any more but I did wish I learned it when I was younger.
I did not finish college either as I was too busy working and living life after graduated from high school. Yes, I was put into 11th grade due to my age when I first arrived here in America, whether I could handle it o not. I went to ESL classes day and night because I wanted to LIVE and not to just survive in this country.
Homeschooling my children gave me yet another chance to learn the language, the history and the culture of America. God is so good in His planning for me to have encountered some wonderful and encouraging homeschooling moms when we decided on the path of home educating our children.
Home Ed is big with me in my house, especially with Christine. We were in the Keeper's program and she had learned many lessons on the domestic realm alongside her academic achievement. Our hope - both Christine and I - is that Christine will be able to do more than boiling water when she gets married. With her education back ground to be {she wants to pursue law and photography after high school} she could work outside until they have a family and "walk back into the kitchen" with ease and readiness.
I am so grateful that Christine has the opportunity to choose and embrace both the career and domestic paths, here in America. Thanks be to God!

Breakfast served by Christine - Cheese Scrambled eggs with sugar Cinnamon toast and orange smoothie. It was yummy!

My beloved domestic girl. I so love this picture of her. She wore no make-up and was cheerfully serving her family.

My Christine and her friend at the Mock Trial competition.

Peter, Pot and Butterflies

Little things that made your heart go "Awwww..."

Yeap, he is just a normal toddler playing with some normal toys.

Peter loves butterflies. Most of the time if I want to calm him down from crying, all I need to do is to show him something butterfly related. I borrowed this colorful book from the library and he was oohs and aaahs all over it.

They made it!

Just for the joy of it, I like to share this good news with you!

They made it!!!

Christine and her Mock Trial teammates are going to compete their final round in the county's courthouse tonight! They have worked so hard to prepare themselves for the competition. I am so proud of them!

Christine is the prosecution pretrial attorney of her team this year and she has worked many long hours on getting her statement and argument down that it was just amazing for me to watch how her brain works. You go Christine!

I so wish to be able to go with Robert to watch the Final but it is hard as it won't end until way after Peter's bed time. Oh well... I guess I will just have to wait for the video.

I am so blessed to have a daughter. In my case, a very sweet and sensible one. I have always dreaded the teen years but Christine has shown me a rare, precious joy of being a mother of a teenage girl. Her understanding of life and her compassion toward others are beyond her age.

Thank you for being my daughter, my dearest. I love you.

Christine (left) with her friend Audrey in the jury room. Can you believe she is only 15 years old? Ok, maybe the braces gave her away. :)

SAHM Moment

One of the many blessings to be a SAHM is what you could do and see around the house.

I could make home cooked breakfast...

and making sure it is nutritious...

and to see grateful eaters.

I am so thankful to be a stay at home mom. I could do this for another sixteen years.
God is good.
